Letter from a reader — Catching Browns in the Cincinnati Creek
| |
Hello Matt,
I have been trying to fish the Cincinnati Creek in the Barneveld, NY area.
Well I was fishing there tonight and I could see the 10 and 12 inch browns
jumping completely out of the water eating the current hatch. I tried many
flies including a light Cahill, irresistible Adams, may fly, and a hairs
ear nymph. I had no luck at all. Not even a little bite.
Any suggestions?
Hi Chris,
Sounds like they are taking emerging caddis flies. The caddis ascend to the
surface rapidly and fish chase the emerging insects to the surface and their
momentum sometimes carries them right out of the water. Try some emergent
caddis pupa or emerging caddis of some kind. Look for flies that flutter
along and sort of look like moths. You should try casting upstream and drifting
the fly down and then back upstream and see if you can get them to take.
Also try skittering Elk Hair Caddis dry flies along the surface as well as
dead drifting them.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to ask any more questions.
Have Fun Fly-fishing!
Matt C.
