do i need a 3wt? im tempted to buy one by frozenfishface on Sat, May 21
i have been teaching myself fly fishing for the last couple years and have enjoyed fly fishing for trout in the syr area. I went to the troutfitter and took a basic fly tying course and got a tfo 5wt 8"6. i like the rod alot and even got a 7wt(tfo) to use for steelhead and bass with limited success. i feel like the 5wt is sometimes too much length wise and maybe overpowers the fight of the smaller trout that i expect to catch. on streams like limestone, 9 mile, butternut, chittenango ect. would a 3wt (tfo of course) of shorter length provide me with better control on these small streams? i also have caught some big bluegills on the 5wt and i'm sure that's fun on the 3wt too.

You can't play golf with just one club. Sound a little familiar? I am not saying yes but I also am not saying no to buying a 3wt. My thought is this, is there someone you can borrow one from? Preferably the kind you are interested in buying or at least similar? My next suggestion and kind of question is rod length. I know many who go with about a 7 to 7 1/2 ft rod on our local streams, you did not mention the length you were thinking of. I have 2 3 wt's. A 6'6" and a 8'6", and both are more of a medium to slow action. These are great when you get a little 4-6 inch native on the other end. So that is my $.02 worth. See if you can borrow one from someone to try before you buy. Test cast one at Troutfitter at the very least. Hope this helped you.

Yes. On your deathbed will you be happier if you denied yourself this?

|"need" my friend is a loaded word. Based on your post, it sounds like you want one (3wt). Therefore, your need is justified. So, go get one.
Unless you are fishing the brushy spring creeks of PA buoying a fly rod exclusively to fish the Ninemile swamp during late summer, a 7' to 8' 3wt should be perfect.
I think what type of cast and line you use are more important than getting a shorter rod. A 7.5' softer rod with a double taper line will allow you to roll cast well in short distances and also overhead cast with minimum false casts. I personally think that the weight forward lines are less effective in smaller streams. because of their taper profile and weight concentration in the front of the line the presentation may not be as delicate. Also, you have to have a certain amount of line out to load the rod properly (because of the taper of the Weight Forward lines).
Now, fishing small creeks with a 3wt rod and dry flies is a lot of fun. If you get too short of a rod, it can make line control tricky. Also, most 7-8 feet 3wt rods are not the best nymphing rod.
Good luck and go get that 3wt.......stimulate the local economy. That's what I keep telling myself. I live in upstate NY and own 3 "spey" rods....needless to say that justification is not my forte.

Yes of course! I just got a 3wt for my grandson. It is the 50th anniversary Cabela's model, its fiberglass, and at $99 bucks you can't go wrong, the glass rod is even more fun on small streams.

I feel your pain. I own a 3wt 7.5 ft TFO. The action is med/fast which is perfect. matched it with a Ross reel both of them came from troutfitter. I would not trade this rod for anything I mean nothing!!!! I"ve have caught and released trout in the 20"-22" range weighing more than 4 pounds. Now this is a hand full for this rod but you play the fish with the butt section of the rod, ask Walt at the fitter he"ll show you what i"m talkin about. I must love this rod look how I"m going on.lenght 7.6ft reel 3/4 wt you can use 4wt line no problem,i have no problem nymphing or streamers.BEST OF LUCK TO YOU.
