Fishing time
10:00am - 3:00pm
Weather conditions
Warm ... about 85 outside. Started off with no clouds, followed by partly cloudy conditions by afternoon. No wind today.
Water conditions
Water levels are normal for this time of year. Clarity was a tiny bit off color ... which is normal. Water temp at tunnel just upstream from Wayfarer Fly Shop was 64 degrees at 10am. Water temp about 1 mile upstream from Marcellus Park was 74 degrees at 2pm. Note the 10 degree temp difference.
Insect activity
Some midges here and there ... nothing to write home about. I probably fished at the worst time of the day.
Fish hooked
Nailed 8 wild browns in the 3 inch fingerling range. Landed 6 stocked browns in the 9 inch range. Landed one 11 inch stocked brown. Had about 25 minnows and creek chubs, plus 1 bluegill. All fish returned unharmed to stream.
Fly pattern used
Fished cased caddis pattern, tied on a #10 3906B (mustad) with 5x tippet on a G.Loomis (GL3) 8-foot, 4-weight. Dead-drift nymph fishing entire time.
Comments
Lots (I mean lots) of heavy equipment and rock being used just upstream of tunnel near Wayfarer Fly Shop. About 20 big semi-loads of stone dumped along stream there. Saw two bulldozers pushing rock around. Looks like an ultra-major stream restoration project going on. Did not stop to talk with anyone. -------- Decided to try new section of stream about 1 mile upstream from park in Marcellus. Saw some big carp in there, and only managed to land a few minnows and creek chub type fish in this section. Found a 5 or 6 foot deep pool behind some houses ... but no trout ... just creek chubs. Water temp here was 74 degrees. A little warm for trout ... but I just wanted to do some exploring anyway. Surprised how much the springs downstream cool off the water. Was only 62 to 64 degrees about 10 miles downstraem near the tunnel by Wayfarer Fly Shop. --------- All in all, was a good day to be out. Wish I could have been on stream at daybreak ... but just got back from Rhode Island at 2am and had to crash for a few hours. Tight Lines. John Coxey (jpcoxey@yahoo.com)
