Fishing time
1:00pm - 5:30pm
Weather conditions
Started out sunny about 80ish. Then clouds rolled in ... with some light sprinkles and temp went into the 70s with a slight breeze.
Water conditions
Water is slightly discolored due to brief rain last night. Stream is same level ... meaning, it's utterly perfect, especially for this time of year. Water temp across from Wayfarer Trout Shop was 64 degrees.
Insect activity
Mosquitoes ... hell, I probably have West Nile Virus by now. Add another 30 bites to the collection. Left ear was totally bloody when I finally left the stream.
Fish hooked
Man ... what an afternoon. Here is the breakdown. Three 13 inch wild browns. Six 11 inch wild browns. Six 8 to 9 inch wild browns. One wild rainbow in the 9 inch range. Five or so wild browns in the 3 inch range. A few stocked browns in the 7 to 8 inch range, followed by a few creek chubs thrown in for fun. No bluegills today. ----- Not bad ... 15 keepers plus all the little ones. ----- All fish caught and released unharmed.
Fly pattern used
Went with a Mustad 94840 - #16 Modified Brown Sulphur nymph. Modified in that it has no wings, and no legs. Just a tail and a body. Fished a dropper system, with the dropper attached to hook of the top fly, with 12 inch of 6x between the two flies. Top fly attacked to fly line via 5x tippet. Fished dead-drift nymph. Fish caught in riflles leading into pools, and also in pools themselves. Yes, I do tie my nymphs on dry fly hooks.
Comments
Would have stayed longer ... but I am so chewed up with mosquitoes and chigger bugs. Very, very wet and damp in the woods this year. ----------- Anyhow, was ultra nice to finally find some decent fishing this time of year near Syracuse. ----------- Link to picture: http://www.flyfishersparadise.com/phpBB-3.0.0/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=730 ----------- Enjoy...John Coxey (jpcoxey@yahoo.com)
