2/2/06: Regulations and Outlook Forum

Regulations and Outlook Forum
There seems to have been some confusion on the Outlook Forum section of the site and I just wanted to clarify and make some suggestions.

First of all I would like to direct all fly fishers to the New York State Freshwater Fishing Regulations. These can be read on the Internet at: http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/fish/fishregs/index.html
Or a booklet form can be obtained anywhere a New York State Fishing License is purchased.

Second I would like to clarify what the regulations are for the Finger Lakes Tributaries.

"Angling is prohibited from January 1st to March 31st and between sunset and sunrise from April 1st to May 15th and October 1st through December 31st." These Finger Lakes Tributary regulations are to the first barrier impassable by fish. Regular trout season regulations apply above the first impassable barrier.

Third I would like to clarify the Great Lakes Tributary Regulations.

These streams are open all year to the first barrier impassible by fish. Please be sure to check the additional regulations for special sections where additional regulations apply.

There are many more regulations that also apply to both the Finger Lakes and the Great Lakes tributaries including special sections so please be sure to read the regulations guide thoroughly before fishing.

Fourth and Last I would like to ask that when entering a location into the outlook forum that you may want to mention a more specific location to help eliminate confusion about the regulations. For example enter Salmon Creek, Tompkins County into the New Location field.

Thanks for all your posts on the Outlook Forum. It was a great year and I hope the information was useful.

Have Fun Fly-fishing!
Matt C.
